The Beatitudes: A Description, Not a Demand

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Matthew 5:3

To understand the Beatitudes, you have to understand what 'blessed' meant in first-century Judea.

The world Jesus stepped into

This was not a fringe view — it was the operating assumption of the culture. The rich young ruler came to Jesus confident of his standing.

Even these people

Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek. Each line would have landed like a provocation.

An announcement, not an assignment

The Beatitudes are not instructions. Jesus is announcing good news to people who already are poor in spirit, who mourn, who are meek.

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor."

Luke 4:18
