Before Jesus taught his disciples what to pray, he told them what not to do. Do not pray to be seen. Do not heap up empty words.
A rhythm, not a recitation
The Lord's Prayer is often treated as a formula to be repeated. But Jesus introduced it with the words 'pray like this' — not 'say these words.'
Our Father
The opening two words are themselves a revolution. In Jesus' day, addressing God as Father — intimately, personally — was almost unheard of.
Praying it today
Try praying the Lord's Prayer slowly, one phrase at a time, pausing after each. Let 'your kingdom come' become a genuine longing.
