Walking Alongside: The Art of Spiritual Friendship

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Proverbs 27:17

The most formative relationships in the New Testament are not classroom relationships. They are road relationships — people walking together, sharing meals, navigating difficulty side by side.

The Jesus model

Jesus chose twelve. He did not run a course for them — he lived with them. They watched him pray. They heard him respond to critics. They saw him weep at Lazarus's tomb and turn over tables in the temple. Formation happened through proximity, not curriculum.

What spiritual friendship looks like

A spiritual friend is not a counsellor or a teacher — though they may be both at times. They are someone who is genuinely interested in your walk with God, who will ask honest questions, who will pray with you and not just for you, and who will tell you the truth in love.

Starting where you are

You do not need a programme or a title to walk alongside someone. You need availability, honesty, and a genuine desire to see them grow. Start with one person. Meet regularly. Ask good questions. Point each other back to Jesus.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ."

Galatians 6:2
